Re: Time Machine

I don't have iPhoto 8 and Leopard running, but here are some comments. TM acts in a special way when you invoke it from the Menu Bar while iPhoto is the frontmost app. In that case, TM shows an iPhoto window. It may take a good deal of time for that window to show images, because TM has to load the ...

Re: Flat-Screen TV as Monitor

you can use RCA cables if you like clutter I just finished making two large computer desks preparatory to moving our office and then working on the room it's in now. (And then moving it back.) Each has a 24" x 4" cutout on the back edge, with a shelf 4" below the cutout to hold a power strip out of...

Re: Flat-Screen TV as Monitor

Thanks. How's the volume on such speakers? We sometimes find that older movies have poor soundtracks, both in quality and volume. It would be convenient to have less cable clutter. The system we have now is a kludge, with a regular TV plus computer speakers (with bass unit) running out of the DVD pl...

Re: Flat-Screen TV as Monitor

Thanks, Ray. I wasn't thinking about running the cable across the room, just far enough to let the MacBook sit on a cart with the TV. I think the Remote app will let me control the movie with my iPhone. This cable seems like it'd do fine: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4637ZM/A I see that Apple ...

Flat-Screen TV as Monitor

I brought this up on the old forum, and I'll reprise it here. I'm going to replace our old CRT TV with a flat-screen model. Probably a 37" from Costco. I'm confused by the many different models Costco offers. Any tips from SMUG? I'll use it with a DVD player (probably a new but simple one) and with ...

Grab a Movie Frame

One of the commonest things I do with movies is to make a still image from somewhere in the movie. There are even cases where I want to make a screenshot on my Mac, and can't do it with a still screenshot. I can use SnapzProX (with movie) to capture a whole sequence, then extract a single frame from...

Re: Birds give thumbs up to iBird Explorer Plus

Is there an app that will allow you to photograph the bird and it will tell you everything you need to know? Well, here's the thing. Many birds are small. Really small. And any that aren't small are far away. Really far away. And even if you can get a good photo--like many dedicated bird photograph...

Birds give thumbs up to iBird Explorer Plus

Back on the old forum, veteran birder Jerry Freilich gave the thumbs up to iBird Explorer Plus. It's like a serious field guide to birds for iPhone. I've found it to be useful in many situations where I would ordinarily have used a bird book like Sibley or Robbins. But today, I gave it an acid test....

Show Info while in iTunes U on iPhone

While playing a video track from iTunes U on my iPhone, I'd like to be able to read the info text with that track. Any idea how to do that? Just tapping the screen hides or shows the player controls, but doesn't bring up any text. Is that something that's embedded by the producer of the podcast?
