Re: desktop folders.

thanks, will give that a try. I have gotten this much done: I tap to click the folder, then secondary click it in the low right hand corner and a drop down window comes and give me choices. I can click open and it does. Is this how this computer should do it? I am so used to just clicking on the fo...

Flexible E-ink Screen: Future of Computing?

On Quirks & Quarks, the Canadian science radio show, Bob McDonald interviews Roel Vertegaal, who works on flexible displays. I don't really buy the idea that we'll dispense with computers as we know them now and switch to multiple portable devices for everything. Nonetheless, an interesting intervie...

Re: desktop folders.

FWIW, here's how I have my mouse and trackpad set up. This is on my iMac, but you could start with similar settings and then tinker. (I usually have my mouse scrolling one click to the right. The Magic Mouse is very sensitive to scrolling speed.) How to set up mice and trackpads is pretty individual...

Re: desktop folders.

Don't be offended, but check your settings in System Preferences > Trackpad and Mouse. You may have inadvertently set the double click spacing way too long. Or maybe your MacBook came that way and you never set it to your liking. On the trackpad, a double tap = double click. This is a very common pr...

Google Earth Flood

Now that spring is just around the corner (knock on wood), here's a cool addition to Google Earth. I have been casually studying a couple of flightless insects in the Hurricane Ridge area for a few summers, and wondered how they get around up there on those sky islands, and how closely related diffe...

Typography, A Very Late Followup

Way back when, I did a presentation on Typography. Here's a late followup, from Garner's Usage Tip of the Day, a free e-mail service from Oxford University Press. Garner's Usage Tip of the Day Hypercorrection (4). Similarly, American and British printers refer to typefaces without "feet" or small pr...

Re: Be aware of MAC Defender malware!

Here's Apple's official page on this malware, including a promise to provide an OS X security update to further protect against it. I hope that fix includes some way to deal with the specific javascript exploit that freezes Safari, and not just a fix overly specific to this malware. http://support.a...

Re: Be aware of MAC Defender malware!

Great post David.

I'd only add that in Activity Monitor, there's a "Filter" field at the upper right corner. You can type in there a key word from every version of this trojan horse that you know about.

iPads Slow to Ship

In case anyone's watching iPad supplies, I ordered a wifi model yesterday with a delivery date of Jun 13 by Standard Shipping.

Note that Apple has been very conservative in estimating delivery dates recently.
