Re: New iMacs

Gosh, doesn't everyone keep at least one OS System 6, 7, 8 and 9 capable computer in their garage for such purposes? What garage? But seriously, folks, I think SMUG should have a Mac-Through-Time Expo (MTTE), featuring Jay's collection. We'd have to have something running Fool's Errand. And the sai...

Re: New iMacs

There's one potentially big advantage of current Macs: they run Snow Leopard, and therefore have Rosetta emulation for PowerPC applications. Rumor has it that Lion will no longer support PPC apps. It's possible that when Apple ships Lion, the Macs they ship on will require Lion. Certainly Macs will ...

Re: Brouhaha about iPhone Location File

Oh, and by the way, there's this new brouhaha: Dutch Police Used TomTom's GPS Data To Target Speeders Only they didn't actually target any particular speeders. They bought data from TomTom, then used that anonymous data to set up speed traps. Over the past week, U.S. consumers have been talking abou...

Re: Brouhaha about iPhone Location File

Some folks in Germany have created a project (maybe an art project?) using the locations of wifi and cell towers collected in this brouhaha. Here's the mention in Macintouch: May. 3, 2011 Apple John Manning Anyone who'd like to do something interesting with his or her iPhone location database should...

Re: Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs -- Highly Recommended

Along with a lot of other media outfits, NPR did a segment on this play. Here's an added note from their website: Editor's Note: After this conversation was taped, we received an email from Steve Jobs responding to our inquiry about the play and the issues it raised. Mr. Jobs provided several docume...

Re: Be aware of MAC Defender malware!

That is a good article David. And, just as I thought, Macworld says it does not break OS X's security. It relies on the user to enter an admin password. As nefarious as MAC Defender might be, the level of concern over infection remains low: Users must be tricked into downloading and installing the p...

Re: Be aware of MAC Defender malware!

Note that it's fairly common (or at least used to be) to see such scams on web sites. And there are a number of other related ways advertisers try to get you to download software. Most of this is Windows software, and won't harm a Mac. Apparently MacDefender does work on a Mac. I'll be interested to...

Re: Brouhaha about iPhone Location File

Here's a well-done article explaining the nuts and bolts of this issue, and giving a pretty good lesson on GPS in the bargain.

Re: Flat-Screen TV as Monitor

If I decide I need to connect our MacBook Pro to our HDTV (in a situation where Apple TV doesn't do the job), the Kanex cable is the item I'd buy: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4637ZM/A Note that a lot of miniDisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters and cables are male mDP to female HDMI. That means you al...
