Re: Office upgrade warning

The image that Jerry shows looks just like my Office for mac 2011, and that is fine with me. Personally, I like drop down dialogs, but the set-up shown is great. The one I have at work, Office 2010 on a PC, is so stupid I cannot use it. Is there a way to change that? This happens with many different...

Re: page jumping while scrolling in Word

Thanks for all your input I normally do have the box for widow-orphan control checked. But it would be a good idea to incorporate that in efforts to make documents behave. Yes, there are a lot of things in Word, and I have just scratched the surface. Like most programs, few people ever learn all tha...

Re: page jumping while scrolling in Word

With this book I actually did do each chapter individually. There were 25 chapters. Then I merged them into one document, using insert file. I made each chapter into a section. It all worked well until I started to assemble the front matter. I just let that first section default to whatever page num...

Re: page jumping while scrolling in Word

I went back for another go at this. I opened the troublesome document, and verified that the same page jumping was still occurring. I then verified that the front matter, 14 pages in this case, was all in one section. The following 25 sections were each in their own section. I do that for two reason...

Re: page jumping while scrolling in Word

With respect to scrolling: I set the magnification so that I can see two whole pages at one time. Then I scroll down. I have done this many times in other documents, so I know that it is supposed to work. I have tried all sorts of combinations of page breaks and section breaks. This particular file ...

Re: Office upgrade warning

Thanks for the advice. When you do those upgrades, does the program still look the same? I mean in particular what they call the ribbon. The ribbon in Word in Office 2011 for mac makes sense. The ribbon in my Word program on a PC at work is Office 2010. It is the version for babies, the pablum versi...

Office upgrade warning

I have been having a bizarre problem with Word for mac, so I thought I would see if I could do an upgrade, and I clicked on Word—upgrade Office. That was a mistake, and probably some typical Microsoft behavior. A box popped up, and I could not get rid of it. There was no "cancel" button, no "x", and...

page jumping while scrolling in Word

I have been experiencing a very strange behavior in MS Word 2011 for mac. I am on a macbook with OS 10.8.3 I have a 170 page document. I set it up very carefully so that the appropriate pages, for example chapter beginnings, are on odd pages, left hand side of the screen when shown in pairs. Normall...

Re: Strange loss of mouse input

I did try to force quit, as Stephen suggested, but that did not work either.
I called Apple about upgrading RAM and storage, but it would require a trip to the apple store, and reinstalling the OS and all the applications and everything else.
I probably won't bother.

Re: Strange loss of mouse input

Thanks for the various tips. A while back I had an issue with having different "mice" active on the same real desktop, i.e. two laptops side by side on a table. With the help of SMUG members I was able to sort that out, and had no further problems. As far as having a wired USB mouse, it is probably ...
