Re: iPhone X Face ID

In any case, I am sure that you would not be the first customer in Starbucks to be looking at an iPhone while ordering a latte! ;) Of course my comment was stupid. People walk around all day, in and out of traffic, in concerts, pretty much everywhere staring intently at their iPhones. I'm probably ...

Re: iPhone X Face ID

I think Apple actually uses the word "alert," presumably to reassure customers that no one can unlock their iPhone X by putting in front of their unconscious or drugged face. I suspect Apple could add features a user could set up, such as winking one eye, though even if that's possible, it might be ...

iPhone X Face ID

I thought, "Oh dear!" when I first saw Al Franken's public letter to Apple about the security of the new Face ID features. His question was valid, but the basic information he wanted was already on Apple's website before Franken asked about it: Face ID is processed in the Secure Enclave and never le...

Re: Tip to turn on Dictation

Ah, well, there's my problem. I had dictation turned off. I'm testing right now. (That sentence was dictated!) Note that if you want to use Enhanced Dictation, you need a 1.2 GB download (3 hours for my meagre DSL). Otherwise, the text-to-speech function requires upload to Apple. For that one...

Re: Tip to turn on Dictation

Hmm. Can't make that work in any app I've tried. And if I click the Siri icon and say "Take Dictation," I get the answer "Sorry Stephen, I can't do that."

IPhone Photography: Depth

Here's a pair of articles about how Apple's using depth, as in depth of field, and 3D mapping in photography. The first article makes clear that when you take an iPhone photo, you're not using a camera stuck onto a cell phone, but using a computer with a lens, or as the article puts it, a machine ey...

Spotlight

As has happened a few times in the past, I found I had to force Spotlight to reindex after installing High Sierra. Spotlight wasn't finding apps, for example. It's possible that it found them after I'd opened them once by hand. Forcing a reindex the simplest way: Navigate to System Preferences > Spo...

Re: Strange New Error Message

One more idea before you buy that new Mac, which may not solve your problem, of course.* Look in Console.app and see if you can find anything labelled in the wee hours. I don't really know if you can search within Console, for a time period, for example. * The new Mac may not solve the problem becau...

Re: Strange New Error Message

This Apple page helpfully says this message indicates a -50 Parameter error. https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptual/AppleScriptLangGuide/reference/ASLR_error_codes.html But that's listed in OS errors: "An operating system error is an error that occurs when A...
